Author Amelia Boteler · Post Author Interview Posting as Amelia Boteler

Do you remember the first story you ever wrote?
Bits and pieces. I was reading a lot of mysteries at the time but mostly Sherlock Holmes. I must have been 9 or 10 years old. It was only a few pages long. I wrote my first erotic piece during detention in high school.

What is your writing process?
I find inspiration all around me. For really goofy things, I like online generators. There are some really silly ones. For my erotica they are usually based upon fantasy. It is such a mix. So I will start with a basic idea, number of characters, particular quirks about them that have been derived from the fantasy and an interesting location.

Do you remember the first story you ever read, and the impact it had on you?
Story in general, no as I was far too young. But for erotica I remember sneaking a copy of Little Birds Erotica by Anais Nin and reading that. We had Lady Chatterly's Lover but that didn't appeal to me. First romance I read was 'Lion of Ireland' by Morgan Llewelyn.

How do you approach cover design?
I think about the characters in the book and develop a cover from that.

What are your five favorite books, and why?
Dream Hunter by Sherrilyn Kenyon, Dead Perfect by Amanda Ashley, A Caress of Twilight by Laurell K. Hamilton, Dark Prince and Shadowgame by Christine Feehan. They do such a fantastic job of putting your right there in the story with the character. Even if it is in a contemporary, urban setting, such a wonderful escape.

What do you read for pleasure?
I try my best to explore new authors while keeping up with my favorites. Right now I'm starting to explore Serial Erotic Romances.

What is your e-reading device of choice?
My phone. It's like my secret stash of books. Shh!

What book marketing techniques have been most effective for you?
At the moment, I'm building up my catalog. After I get a few more under my belt I plan on hitting it hard.

Describe your desk
Rather large, messy, sits next to a large window where I can watch the wildlife.

Where did you grow up, and how did this influence your writing?
I grew up in Washington state. I don't think it influenced my writing very much. I don't tend write about it, either as character background or location. That may change in the future, I can't say for sure.

When did you first start writing?
About 2 years ago, with no real motivation. 6 months ago more motivation and recently a lot more motivation.

What's the story behind your latest book?
I like the idea of regular people finding happiness in their world. I think it is something we all want.

What motivated you to become an indie author?
Impatience.

What is the greatest joy of writing for you?
Exploiting the things that keep me up at night instead of them exploiting me. I have so many ideas for stories I have to get them out of my head. And if I can bring someone as much pleasure as they do me, huzzah! That makes my day.

What are you working on next?
More Short Stories! The next one is ready, just waiting for the go ahead.
